Spain has announced a major update involving the permanent ID, also known as the national identity card, for older people. Previously, most citizens over 70 held a type of permanent ID that needed no renewal. However, new European rules require changes to how these cards work.
What Is a Permanent ID and Who Needs It?
A permanent ID, in Spain called the national identity card or DNI, is used to prove a citizen’s identity. Until now, older people over 70 received this type of permanent ID, which had no expiry date. This national identity card was very useful for official matters and made things easier for older people.
Spanish law has provided different types of permanent ID. Most older people hold the traditional card, while some citizens with disabilities may also have one. The permanent ID is widely accepted for local activities, banking, travel within Spain, and medical visits. It is simple to use and recognized by many government bodies.
Why Is Spain Changing the Permanent ID?
The European Union has issued new rules to make national identity cards more secure. These rules require every EU country, including Spain, to update their national identity system. Older types of permanent ID often do not have modern security features or biometric data. For this reason, Spain must phase out the old permanent ID card by August 3, 2031.
Anyone who still holds this type of permanent ID must renew it by this date. After that, the old permanent ID will not be valid. The renewal process is simple, and older people can go to their local police office. There is no need to wait until the last minute.
The updated national identity card for older people will not say “permanent” anymore. It will have an expiry date set as “01-01-9999,” showing it is meant to last a lifetime but complies with new standards.
How Will the New National Identity Card Help Older People?
The new national identity card will include digital and biometric features. This allows older people to sign documents online and verify their identity easily for official business. The process for getting the new permanent ID is quick, with no appointment needed in most cases.
Officials advise renewing the permanent ID earlier if older people plan to travel. The traditional permanent ID card may not be accepted for travel, especially on certain airlines or outside Spain. With the new national identity card, Spanish older people will have access to modern services and better security.
