Spanish writer Juan del Val has won the 2025 Planeta Prize for his novel Vera, una historia de amor. The announcement came out on Wednesday night in Barcelona, giving credit to one of Spain’s most loved modern writers. The plot revolves around Vera, a middle-aged divorcee who leaves her husband, a marquis. Eventually, she finds love and freedom with the young man, Antonio, who helps her to get back to her true self.
Vera, a love story is thus a narrative of love, liberation, and class struggle among others. The story sets itself in modern-day Sevilla and portrays a woman who gains strength after personal struggle. The jury of the Planeta Prize indicated the book with words “The novel is contemporary, it provides social critique and contains a bit of thriller.”
One of the most prestigious prizes in Spanish literature, the Planeta Prize 2025, is already winner of €1 million, and besides this, it rewards authors who represent the shifting cultural identity of Spain. During a ceremony attended by major literary personalities, Juan del Val received the award from the second vice president of Spain, Yolanda Díaz.
The Journey of Juan del Val
Juan del Val has reached the point where he is recognized – and even loved – by the general public. Juan was already well-known and popular in the literary world when he got the 2025 Planeta Prize. His novel that has become the fourth in his solo career is a continuation of an extraordinary journey of writing that encompasses such titles as Delparaíso, Bocabesada, and Parece mentira.
In 2019, Juan del Val was awarded the Premio Primavera de Novela for Candela, which also dealt with the topic of emotional depths and self-discovery.

His collaboration with his wife, journalist and author Nuria Roca, produced books like Lo inevitable del amor and Para Ana (de tu muerto). Their works together combine wit and insight, capturing the modern dynamics of relationships.
To compete for the prize, Juan del Val wrote the book No es tan fácil morir de amor but used the name Elvira Torres. The character development along with the depth of emotion made the winner’s story recognizable and the jury’s favorite choice.
Juan del Val, besides being a writer of great merit, is also a person of Spanish public life due to his engaging television shows. He is a constant presence in the popular talk-shows El Hormiguero and La Roca. In addition, he is a judge in the Antena 3 talent competition El Desafío. His captivating TV acts have made him both a cultural Icon and a narrator with huge audiences.
The Finalist and the Future of Spanish Fiction
The finalist for the 2025 Planeta Prize was Galician author Ángela Banzas for her novel Cuando el viento hable. Her story follows a woman born during the Spanish postwar era who uncovers the existence of a lost twin sister. The writer was able to reveal his characteristic mix of mystery and emotional tales in the novel. Ángela Banzas is already the author of four books such as El silencio de las olas and La conjura de la niebla.
This year’s Planeta Prize jury included renowned figures such as José Manuel Blecua, Juan Eslava Galán, Pere Gimferrer, Carmen Posadas, Luz Gabás, Eva Giner, and editor Belén López. Two members, Blecua and Galán, participated remotely due to health reasons.
The prize serves as a promotion of the vibrant and diverse Spanish literary scene by uncovering new authors who interweave personal accounts with social commentary. Juan del Val’s Vera, una historia de amor gave a very emotional narrative that the critics found both contemplative and recognizable.

In his acceptance speech, Juan del Val was thankful for the honor of being counted among the best writers in Spain. He acknowledged his readers and all those who have faith in the potency of ordinary tales and dedicated his triumph to them. His win is a significant step in his creative journey, solidifying his position in the contemporary Spanish literature even more.
A Continuing Legacy
Juan del Val’s participation at the 2025 Planeta Award is an indicator of his rising influence in both literature and media. He is remarkable for making his storytelling so simple yet so emotional and at the same time so real, thus, he is able to portray the life of the present day accurately. With Vera, una historia de amor, he continues to prove that great fiction thrives on authentic emotion.
Among the various themes of the novel – freedom, rediscovery, and personal courage – most of the readers likely will be able to associate the one or the other with their life experience. Merging romantic narrative with social commentary in a very subtle way has been the writer’s signature style.
With his victory at the 2025 Planeta Prize, Juan del Val steps into the shoes of only a handful Spanish authors who have made such massive contributions to the country’s literary legacy. His success not only enriches modern Spanish literature but also revives the interest of the new generations of writers across the world.
