A Holiday That Turned Into Tragedy

A British tourist was killed in a tragic bus crash in the Canary Islands on Friday, April 10, 2026. The tour bus lost control on the GM-2 road in La Gomera. It plunged into a deep ravine at around 1:15pm local time. Twenty-seven others were injured. The road is steep and full of sharp bends. On this day, there was no chance to recover.

What Went Wrong on the Road

The driver spoke to police after the crash. He said the brakes stopped working as the bus went downhill. He tried to steer onto a dirt track to slow the vehicle. But it was too late. The bus fell around 10 metres into the ravine near San Sebastian, the island’s main town.

Emergency teams arrived quickly. A medical helicopter landed at the scene. Five ambulances rushed in. Fire services and Civil Protection officers also responded. The response was fast and large in scale.

The bus belonged to Gomera Tours. The company runs excursions and hotel transfers across the islands. They declined to comment when contacted.

In total, 28 people were on the bus. There were 27 British tourists and one driver. Sadly, one British man lost his life in the crash. Three others suffered serious injuries. They were airlifted to hospitals in Tenerife for urgent care. Twenty-three more passengers had minor injuries. Ambulances and Red Cross workers took them to Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Hospital in La Gomera.

The group had stayed at El Balcon de Santa Ana resort in Playa de Santiago. A hotel receptionist confirmed they were all British. She said they had left that morning to catch the ferry to Tenerife. It was meant to be a simple transfer. Instead, it became a tragedy.

Officials Speak Out

Spanish authorities responded quickly. Canary Islands Minister Angel Victor Torres made a public statement. He said:

“Tragic news in La Gomera, with the confirmation of one person deceased. With a heavy heart. May there be no more victims.” — Angel Victor Torres, Minister for Territorial Policy, Canary Islands Government

Furthermore, the Canary Islands Government declared a formal multi-casualty emergency alert. This came into effect at 2pm on Friday, April 10.

This Road Has Seen Tragedy Before

La Gomera is a beautiful island. It draws visitors with its laurel forests, clifftop views and quiet villages. However, its roads are narrow and dangerous. Large vehicles face real risks on its mountain routes.

Moreover, this was not the first crash on the GM-2 road. Last year, one woman died and 10 people were injured on the same stretch. As a result, road safety questions are rising again. Authorities must now look closely at safety rules for tourist transport operators on the island.

In addition, Spanish police have opened a formal investigation. Therefore, the full cause of the crash is still under review.

A Popular Destination Now Facing Hard Questions

Every year, millions of British tourists visit the Canary Islands. They come for the warm weather, low-cost flights and easy lifestyle. La Gomera is smaller and quieter than Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Consequently, it attracts those who want a peaceful escape.

However, Friday’s crash changes things. It raises serious concerns about tourist transport safety. Families of those involved are still waiting for answers. Meanwhile, investigators continue their work on the ground.

What should have been a sunny Friday trip has instead left a community in shock and a family in grief.
