Valencia, Spain | On October 27, 2025 – The legendary coach José Manuel Ochotorena, who was also the Spanish national team, passed away at the age of 64. He died after a battle with cancer. And the world of football as a goalkeeper’s coach was left behind him the so-called “big and positive” mark. José Manuel Ochotorena was among the main reasons for the birth of the best goalkeepers in the world of football in the last decades.

The general public saw only a coach in José Manuel Ochotorena. But he was also a very gifted and skillful goalkeeper haunting the shadows of his previous active days. Real Madrid and Valencia are just some of the clubs he played with and where he was recognized as a good goalie. Through this club, he scored the Zamora Trophy for the best goalkeeper in La Liga during the season 1989-90. His talent enabled him to be a part of the Spanish team for the World Cup in Italy in 1990.

Though José Manuel Ochotorena was a promising and gifted goalkeeper he opted for coaching as a career. He first served as the goalkeeping coach of the Spanish national team. Then got promoted to the coaching staff of Valencia. He understood and knew very well the hard work that was needed. He was able to mix that with his player skills to teach and guide young goalkeepers through the tough period of their career with great success.

Legendary Coaching Career

José Manuel Ochotorena was respected for his expertise in goalkeeper training as a coach of Valencia and the Spanish national team. He helped Spain to two European Championships and the World Cup in 2010 through his close collaboration. Over almost twenty years with some of the top coaches like Vicente Del Bosque and Rafa Benitez. 

The influence of José Manuel Ochotorena went beyond the borders of Valencia. When Rafa Benitez moved to Liverpool, he also took José Manuel with him and his coaching help. He led the team to the victory in the Champions League final of 2005. His counsel to the goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek in that final was decisive for the success of Liverpool over AC Milan.

José Manuel Ochotorena has been the one behind the training of top-class goalkeepers throughout his career. Some of the most famous among them include Iker Casillas, Santiago Cañizares, Vicent Valdés, Andrés Palop, Pepe Reina, Vicente Guaita, Neto, and Jasper Cillessen. The impact was so great that the players could show their best in both club and international matches.

Recently, José Manuel Ochotorena was training Giorgi Mamardashvili, a young and gifted goalkeeper from Georgia. Mamardashvili named him the main source of help during his progress and even contacted him before his move to Liverpool.

José Manuel Ochotorena had to stay in the background due to health issues. But still kept in touch with Valencia and was involved in the club’s progress until the last moment. The unwavering attachment of José Manuel to the soccer world through the training of goalkeepers left a mark not only in Spain but also in the whole football world.
