Sevilla, October 22, 2025 – Sandra Peña family, a 14-year-old girl who died by suicide as a result of bullying, filed a lawsuit against the school. The family alleges that the institution did not execute the anti-bullying protocol, even though it was legally obligated to do so. The case of Sandra has become a concern that brings forward the need for schools to have strong preventive policies against bullying.

The family of Sandra Peña has already taken the first steps towards suing the Irlandesas de Loreto that is located in Sevilla, the school where the girl was getting her education. The family claims that the school turned a deaf ear to complaints about bullying that they made two times in a formal manner. Sandra Peña said that bullies harassed her online. She even blocked the perpetrators on social media to stop the harassment. The school failed to take any action according to the law meant to prevent bullying or deal with suicidal behavior.

The family’s spokesperson, Isaac Villar, who is also Sandra’s uncle, said lawyers are reviewing what type of legal action to take and against whom. He stressed that the school will surely be part of the lawsuit. The Ministry of Education in Andalusia already confirmed that the school, where Sandra Peña was a pupil, did not follow the prescribed procedures. The police are still scrutinizing the messages and social media communications on Sandra’s phone to clarify the situation of bullying.

School’s Response and New Plan of Action

One week after Sandra Peña death, the school announced a new plan to support vulnerable students. The Irlandesas de Loreto school expressed deep sorrow over Sandra’s passing and stated their commitment to prevention and early detection of mental health issues among students. The school said it will now involve external psychologists and social services specialists in this new approach.

For Anti – bullying protocol, the school has also set an objective to provide better teacher training and create necessary measures to protect students who are in vulnerable or difficult situations.
