Madrid, October 22, 2025 – A tongue slip by Vice President Yolanda Díaz has fueled political laughter and fresh debate in the Spanish Senate. The leader of Sumar mistakenly said “queda gobierno de corrupción para rato,” instead of “queda gobierno de coalición para rato,” while defending the government’s integrity during a control session. Members of the Partido Popular (PP) quickly seized upon her phrase, which said, “there will be government of corruption for a long time.”
Laughter and Reaction in the Senate
When Yolanda Díaz made the slip, PP senators instantly rose to their feet, applauding and cheering. The Vice President tried to correct herself but appeared visibly frustrated by the reaction. Senate President Pedro Rollán had to intervene, asking the PP bench to “maintain decorum” and return to their seats.

The moment quickly went viral as PP members posted the video across social media platforms. The laughter over Yolanda Díaz’s comment spread beyond the chamber, with the phrase “Gobierno de corrupción para rato” dominating public talk and online debate.
The incident took place during a heated exchange between Yolanda Díaz and PP spokesperson Alicia García. García put it to Díaz that she was really convinced of being a part of a “clean and transparent government.” The mistake had happened and still, Yolanda Díaz had already denounced the People’s Party for rejecting a draft of a law on the formation of a national anti-corruption agency. She was saying that the government would be honest and transparent with its every action.
Government’s Response and Political Consequences
Minister of Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska later on came to the Vice President’s defense and stated that Yolanda Díaz used irony as a tool to counter the opposition’s claims. He defined the expression as a joke rather than a real confession. In the meantime, the PP kept mocking the event and they took advantage of it to weaken the coalition’s trustworthiness. Among the supporters of Yolanda Díaz were Carmen Calvo and other members of Sumar. They were the partners of the government. These partners pointed out that the media can highly publicize even minor mistakes. They can also exaggerate such mistakes in today’s politically charged atmosphere. They stressed that Díaz’s contributions to social reforms are much stronger than a verbal mistake.

This incident demonstrates how the political climate in Spain is still very tense and reactive. The PP has often taken Yolanda Díaz and her coalition’s calls for transparency as a target for criticism. While politicians like Carmen Calvo have pointed to the government’s record on anti-corruption as an argument in its defense. The gaffe, although unintentional, has provided new ammunition to the critics at a time when the government’s integrity is subjected to constant opposition scrutiny.
In the end, Yolanda Díaz’s words- though mistaken – have become a new tagline in Spanish politics. Her focus remains on proving that the “gobierno de coalición” stands firm despite political noise. Even amid mockery, Yolanda Díaz continues to reinforce her stance on ethical governance, supported by allies like Carmen Calvo who stress unity within the leadership.
